Bad credit auto financing
When a co-signer or a bigger down payment helps, and what a co-signer takes on.
Marketing Director | Bud Clary Auto Group
Dustin Schuler runs marketing for Bud Clary Auto Group. He's worked on his own cars since high school, where he earned college credits and worked toward an ASE certification, and he still does his own wrenching.

Dustin leads marketing for Bud Clary Auto Group, which is family-owned, in its third generation and made up of 14 franchise stores in five Washington cities. In his 10 years with the group, the job has covered 11 makes, Hyundai among them, along with Chevrolet, Ford, Subaru, Toyota, Honda, Volkswagen, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram.
The interest started when he was a little boy, and the car that taught him to work a clutch was a Mercedes-Benz 240D. He came out of high school with a certificate of work readiness and certifications through AYES and NATEF, plus college credits from starting down the road toward an ASE certification.
He has never stopped working on his own vehicles. The current lineup is a Chevy Silverado 1500 riding on a mid-travel suspension setup, a Nissan 370Z set up for drifting, and the one he likes best: an all-wheel-drive Audi A6 TDI breathing through a large single turbo. That diesel is close to 200,000 miles, he has upgraded and replaced its turbo three times, and every bit of the work has been his. The single exception across all his cars was a key fob that needed programming.
When he writes a guide, the test is simple: does it answer the question the way he would answer a friend?
Bud Clary Hyundai sits at 700 7th Ave. in Longview, and the store's areas-served pages run from Kelso and Woodland down I-5 to Ridgefield, Battle Ground and Vancouver. For a shopper in Vancouver or Battle Ground, coming here is a real drive, so Dustin wants the answers on the page before anyone gets in the car.
Dustin has upgraded and replaced the turbo on his own car three times, so his warranty guide points out that Hyundai's 2026 handbook names the turbocharger among the engine parts on its 10-year powertrain coverage for original owners, then works through who keeps that coverage, how the rust rules play out in a wet climate, and what Roadside Assistance does when a trip goes wrong far from home.
The anti-theft guide is for owners of turn-key 2011 to 2022 Hyundais. It covers Hyundai's free software upgrade and ignition cylinder protector, the March 31, 2027 date Hyundai lists for the protector, and what the multistate settlement pays after a theft.
The financing guide takes on two ways to strengthen a car loan application when credit is thin or damaged: a co-signer and a larger down payment. It lays out what a co-signer actually signs up for, from FTC and CFPB guidance, so a parent in Kelso or a first-time buyer in Longview can make that call with clear eyes.
Each one carries his byline and the month he last reviewed it.
